First post for History

This is the first post for the OFI History portion of the blog. If you have found something interesting about history and would like to share it, as always feel free to comment and give me your insight. I am always looking for a good story from the times of distant past.

  1. Did you know that the famed war of 1812 actually ended BEFORE the Battle of New Orleans? We normally correspond the battle to the war itself, saying that it was one of the biggest moments in the war. In fact, the war had ended for over two weeks before this battle even started. Unfortunately, due to the lack of technology and telecommunications we so enjoy today, the Americans, nor the British knew the war had ended. They still believed we were in a huge conflict. Therefore, the war had ended, but it took a whopping three weeks for information to be horse ridden to both companies. Unfortunately, the Battle was planned two weeks after the war ended, but had either side waited for another week or so, no blood would have been shed. Hence, the Battle of New Orleans was really a useless battle because the war had already ended. Who knew?

  2. What would have been if you hadn't turned on your computer today and instead went outside for a bike ride? The question of, what if, can lead to many possibilities. If you had gone to the store ten minutes earlier to get food, you might have met an old friend. If you went to the store ten minutes after you went, you could have witnessed a robbery. If you decided to clean the house today, but instead played video games, what would that visitor say if he or she randomly came in? Could a simple decision to not clean the house loose a friendship, or would it strengthen it because he or she feels more at home? And then if you did play games instead, in the future that might be a conversation starter for a new friend. Imagine if you had never played that game, and that conversation would never have happened. And that friendship would never have been kindled. I just think it is amazing how one little event so small and seemingly insignificant can completely change your life. What about you?
